“You Cared About the Plant” (Jonah 4:10)
Yom Kippur Mincha 5786 by Rabbi Dara Frimmer
This Yom Kippur Mincha sermon begins with the story of a broken butterfly chrysalis and connects it to Jonah’s grief over the death of his plant. Both moments reflect our longing for something—anything—to work out in a world that feels uncertain and broken. Through Jonah’s struggle, we are reminded that heartbreak can also open us to empathy, teaching us to extend love beyond ourselves even when it feels impossible. In a season of repentance and renewal, we are called to transform our grief into a deeper capacity for love, healing, and wholeness.
