Temple Isaiah is partnering with Los Angeles synagogues for Israel Independence Day, with communal prayer, singing, and learning.

Come for the day, or for a single session, as we spend Israel Independence Day learning with Isaiah clergy. This year has been complex and heart-wrenching, and together we will explore different facets of our relationship with Israel.

10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.: WHAT COMES NEXT? with Rabbi Zoe Klein Miles What comes next after the war between Israel and Hamas ends? We’ll delve into what different thinkers have proposed, as well as our own opinions.
11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.: ZIONISM & ANTI-ZIONISM with Rabbi Dara Frimmer We will explore the history of these opposing ideas and how they are being used in headlines and discourse today.
12:30 p.m. – 1:15 p.m.: ISRAELI LUNCH & TABLE TALK
1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.: SONGS OF ISRAEL with Cantor Randall Schloss The familiar song Yerushalayim Shel Zahav (Jerusalem of Gold) was written just before the Six Day War, with the fourth verse written just after. We will take a deeper look at this and other songs that are bound to Israel, its history and our Jewish lives today.

The October 7 massacre in Israel left a deep scar on the Jewish community. While there’s been discussion about the war’s causes, a crucial space is missing: processing the emotional impact. This Zoom panel brings together Isaians who are also mental health professionals: Natasha Bogopolskaya, Michael Khayat, Shireen Oberman, Madeline Wolf, and Jeff Zimerman. They’ll discuss:
Compassion Fatigue & Secondary Trauma Coping with Complicated Grief Building Community Resilience Finding Posttraumatic Growth
Following the panel, small breakout rooms will offer a safe space to share your experiences. We’ll conclude with a guided mindfulness practice

Rabbi Dalia Marx, PhD, is the Rabbi Aaron D. Panken Professor of Liturgy and Midrash at Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) in Jerusalem. She also teaches at various academic institutions in Israel and Europe and is dedicated to promoting liberal Judaism, religious pluralism, and interfaith understanding. Rabbi Marx, a tenth-generation Jerusalemite, earned her doctorate at Hebrew University and her rabbinic ordination at HUC-JIR in Jerusalem and Cincinnati. Rabbi Marx and her life partner Roly Zylbersztein, PhD, live in Jerusalem; they have three children. Bring your own lunch.
Marx is the lead editor of the Israeli Reform siddur, Tfillat HaAdam (2020). Her book From Time to Time: Journeys in the Jewish Calendar (Yeditos Sfarim 2018), was translated to several languages, and is available in English from the CCAR Press.
She is the author of When I Sleep and When I Wake: On Prayers between Dusk and Dawn (Yediot Sfarim, 2010, in Hebrew), A Feminist Commentary of the Babylonian Talmud (Mohr Siebeck, 2013, in English), About Time: Journeys in the Jewish-Israeli Calendar (Yediot Sfarim, 2018, in Hebrew) and the co-editor of a few books.
