Jazz Shabbat Dinner and Discussion

Join us for a festive service that blends our ancient words of prayer with syncopation and swing followed by speaker Lee Winkleman

The California Religious Acton Center of Reform Judaism (RAC-CA) is the statewide social justice effort of the Union for Reform Judaism, representing more than 100 congregations and 150,000 Reform Jews across California. Together RAC-CA congregations stand in solidarity with vulnerable populations and work to advance Jewish values in the public sphere.  Join us as we learn from Lee Winkleman, RAC-CA's Organizing Director, about how we can move the needle in California on the issues we care about most:  climate change, gun violence prevention, immigrant justice, criminal justice reform, mental health, housing and homelessness.

Description: The Middle East today is beset by conflict, as simultaneous and overlapping wars stretching from Libya to Syria to Yemen further destabilize the region. Though Israel is largely not involved in these conflicts, the country is inevitably affected by these developments. From the rise of ISIS to the effort to combat Iran, Jordan will explore a framework for understanding the conflicts in the Middle East today, and discuss the threats -- and surprising opportunities -- that they present to Israel and the United States.

Biography: Jordan Reimer is currently a policy analyst at RAND in the defense and political sciences department. He has an MPA from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University and studied in Egypt and Yemen. He served as a policymaker at the Department of Defense under two administrations, focusing on Iraq, Iran, and the Arabian Peninsula. Before RAND, Jordan was an intelligence analyst at the New York City Police Department, working on counter-terrorism investigations with a nexus to Syria. He is also a lecturer and course instructor on conflict and insurgency in the post-Arab Spring Middle East, radicalization, and political Islam, most recently at New York University.
