Sixth Graders Take K Buddies “Shopping” for Beyond Shelter
There is nothing sweeter than to see the sixth graders serve as mentors to the kindergarten kids. The Thanksgiving Beyond Shelter Market provided just the opportunity. After a short and meaningful lesson about the importance of sharing our good fortune with those who are in need conducted by Rabbi Dara and one of the parent volunteers, the kindergarten and sixth grade classes partnered up and “shopped” together for food that will be donated to the Beyond Shelter residents. The older students gently guided the little ones as they browsed the displays of canned yams, cranberries and boxes of stuffing, as well as beautiful green apples and succulent onions to complete the festive meal. The buddies enjoyed the experience of picking out good foods for the needy families at Beyond Shelter. The children were very immersed in this program which set out to teach them about giving gratitude and the impact of tzedakah.
Following our shopping spree the older students were invited by the little ones to share a snack and a music session with Jeffrey. Since this is a second time that the sixth graders are visiting with the K crowd, the kids have now started bonding with each other and learning about each other likes and dislikes! We look forward to another visit and song session during Hanukkah!
